Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to start at a certain time? Or Can I just show up on the night?

You can join our classes at any time! No booking required - Just show up!
We take new students in every class and when you are ready to progress to the next level, we'll let you know.

Do I need a partner?

No, you don't need to bring a partner. We swap partners regularly during classes, so you get to dance with a variety of people. If you come with a partner, you may stay together if you wish, but we recommend you swap, as you will learn more.

How much are the classes?

If you want to pay casually, our classes are $15 per class or $25 per two classes in the same night. Please bring cash. We do offer a discount card - if you pay for 5 classes in advance, you get the 6th class Free. This is valid for 6 consecutive weeks only and it may be used at any Cuban Groove class suitable to your level.

Do you offer student discounts?

Yes we do offer students a discount - classes for students are $12 per Casual class or a discount card of $60 for 6 classes. This is valid for 6 consecutive weeks only and it may be used at any Cuban Groove class suitable to your level. (With valid student ID only!)

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing - and it does get hot! Dance shoes are ideal, but not required. Wear shoes that are comfortable and do not have too much grip - sports or running shoes are not great for this reason. Make sure your shoes strap or tie onto your foot so that your foot doesn't step out of the shoe as you move. (Please respect others and remember your personal hygiene by making sure your breath is sweet and use deodorant.)

What levels do you teach?

We offer classes for beginners, improvers, intermediate and advanced.

Can I just watch a class to see if I like it?

Yes, you may come and watch for 10 minutes at the end of a class. Please call us first to advise us that you are coming to watch.

Will you be teaching any other style of dance?

All levels of Salsa and Rueda include a taste of another Popular, Afro-Cuban or Latin dance so you learn how to mix all these different rhythms - the essence of Cuban Salsa! From time to time we do special courses in other dance styles. Make sure you join our mailing list so we can let you know when these are happening.

What is Cuban Salsa?

Salsa is a mix of dances that originated from the Cuban son. The form of Cuban salsa danced today is often referred to in Cuba as 'Casino'. Cuban style salsa is sometimes referred to as a circluar style, and is often characterised by the leader and follower circling around each other. The basic step in Cuban style is an open break - the leader dances the basic in reverse. For more information see our dance style description.

What is Rueda?

Rueda, meaning wheel, is a Salsa style that originates in Cuba. It is also called Rueda de Casino. Couples dance in a circle, with one leader calling a move which all dancers execute. Most moves finish by changing partners. Our Intermediate classe introduces rueda, and our advanced class develops more complex Rueda calls. For more information about different levels see the class description page.
